Dr Duncan McFetridge MP
King Street / Kibby Bridge
Tuesday, 16 June 2009 05:03

Residents would be well aware that I have been lobbying both the State and Federal Governments for funding to replace the King Street Bridge at Glenelg North which has a limited life expectancy due to concrete cancer.  To date the State Government has refused to contribute funding to replace the bridge.  I am very hopeful that the City of Holdfast Bay's submission to Infrastructure Australia for Federal Government funding will be successful.  In this event, local residents have approached me seeking to have the new bridge named after World War II Victoria Cross hero, Sergeant William (Bill) Kibby who was a Glenelg resident and one of only two South Australians to be honoured with the coveted Victoria Cross for valour.

I would be interested to hear your views on this suggestion.

Duncan

Helllo Hon. Duncan McFetridge
With regards to the King Street Bridge I think it would be good to ask the aborginal community from the area if they would like to suggest a name for the bridge, as a gesture of healing and reconcilliation i would hope that they may even have some say in the architectural and aesthetic design- in contrast to the Hindamarsh bridge saga that occurred in another South Australian area.

I would be more inclined to support your approaches for funding if I knew what the original funding arrangements were for the upkeep of the bridge, which were no doubt put in place when it was built. And if they weren't, should have been, long before it started to deteriorate so badly! Perhaps you could apprise me on this matter.
I am an ex-serviceman, by the way, not just a crotchetty old malcontent, but I do not understand this compulsion to want to name bridges, underpasses etc after certain people or events from conflicts past, no matter how deserving they may seem. To my mind, King Street bridge readily identifies it. Why we have to have a Gallipoli underpass instead of simply the 'ANZAC Highway underpass', I don't know. And the Birkinhead Bridge stood for an awful long time, and perhaps that needed to be remembered, rather than Tom Derrick, deserving though he is of remembering. William Kibby VC has already been honoured with a street named after him in the Glenelg area, as have a number of other recipients of awards for valour. And Duncan, I am not sure about the statement that Kibby is one of only two South Australians who have been awarded the VC. Is this correct, or am I missing something?
